Candles + Volume
A candle shows price action; volume shows participation. One without the other is half a sentence.
Volume is the candle's voice
Volume — how many shares changed hands — tells you how much conviction was behind a candle. A move on heavy volume means real participation; the same move on thin volume may be an illusion.
The principles are few and powerful:
- Volume expansion confirms strength. A breakout on high volume means many participants agreed with the move — it is far more likely to hold.
- Volume contraction signals weakening momentum or indecision. A rally on falling volume is running out of fuel.
- Breakout volume is the key test. A breakout without a rise in volume is the classic setup for a false breakout — price moved, but nobody meaningful came along.
- Rejection volume — a long-wick rejection candle on heavy volume tells you large participants defended that level. That is institutional-scale resistance, not a random wick.
In short
Volume measures conviction. Expansion confirms, contraction warns, and a breakout without volume is usually a trap.
