Beware of traps — not every pattern is valid, and no pattern is valid often enough to trade blindly.
The honest truth about pattern reliability
Here is what most candlestick courses will not tell you: candlestick patterns are not highly reliable on their own. Studied in isolation, most have success rates only modestly better than a coin toss — and many none at all.
This is not a reason to abandon them. It is the reason this entire course exists. A pattern is a starting point, not a signal. Its reliability rises sharply only when it is confirmed by everything the previous modules taught — the right structure, the right level, and supporting volume. A pattern alone is weak; a pattern in context is where the edge, such as it is, actually lives. Be clear-eyed about the numbers. No honest source can promise you a win rate, because a pattern's outcome depends on the market, the timeframe, the instrument and the context. Anyone quoting you a fixed "83% accurate hammer" is selling something. Real edges in markets are small, hard-won and easily erased by costs and mistakes.
The five most common traps
- False breakout — price breaches a level but closes back inside. No follow-through; those who bought the breakout are trapped.
- Weak engulfing — an engulfing body that is barely larger, or that forms in a quiet, mid-range zone with no volume. The shape is there; the meaning is not.
- Isolated doji — a doji with no prior trend and no nearby level. Indecision about nothing means nothing.
- Unsupported hammer / shooting star — a textbook reversal candle appearing away from any support or resistance. No confluence, no signal.
- Low-volume breakout — price moves through a level but participation is absent. A trap in progress.
Patterns are weak alone and only useful in context. No one can promise a win rate; anyone who does is selling. Filtering out traps is the real skill.
